Comments: we acquired "Aruba" -Sun Conure, about October. I have had other birds, dogs, cats, animals, all my life and NOTHING prepared me for ARUBA. She looks like the cover of the Sun Conure Book -beautiful! And that she can be loud does not quite cover it! She can make your ear drum vibrate when she is displeased. She is spoiled and demanding and thinks she is a human....say a human 2 year old. My two year old baby. She has initiated an interesting behavior as to rolling over on her back when she want to play. Then she wants her tummy tickled, and hang upside down, even hang by one foot. (I keep my other hand about 6-8 inches under her in case she should fall or she reaches for the other hand when she has had enough aoerobatics for the day. About 10-15 minutes of this high-wire play time is all she wants. The biting, will start with her working on a mole, or skin tag, and keeps working it. Or if she has just been out of her cage a short time, say for housekeeping reasons & I have to go to work that day. She will express her displeasure in being put back in by nipping. She is sleeeping right now, on my shoulder, just under my jaw line. It surprises me that she would sleep on my shoulder instead of a cage. The one line you wrote, that was most comforting, is that a Concure needs 12 hours of sleep a day. I don't get much house work done as she always wants to be with me 24 hours if she could. Not afraid of vacuum sweepers, or hand vac's. Loves people. Loves being the center of attention in a group of people. Will go through her "begging" to be picked up, nodding "yes" that she's a pretty bird, yes to all kinds of compliments. She's at home in the middle of a party. She doesn't know a stranger, but takes to women quicker than men. Will shake her head vigiously "no", when I'm carring the parakeets. Sometimes vigiously "no" when she's been the center of attention and it's time to cover her. You gave me some pointers which I will try. Thank you for taking the time to write this. Comments: I enjoy your webpage and I learned a lot. I have a Sun conure that is almost one year old and your hints were valuable. I learned a lot since this is my first experience with a conure. I love pets (we have three dogs and a hamster). Previously I have parakeets, a parrot, lovebirds and cockatiels. But we better have one bird since they request and take too much time. My conure name is :"Bonita" Beautiful in spanish) Thanks for your information Take care, Martha from Puerto Rico |

Comments: I have a one year old blue crown named "Harley". She is the the sweetest bird. Quite a vacabulary as well as her personality. I was doing a little research on conures. I have to take her in to 4 different science classes today for "show and tell". Our family enjoys her tremendously! |

Comments: Is yours a one-bird household? I've been going to a lot of bird shows and keep falling in love with Amazons. I have a 2.5 year old Timneh Grey at home and was wondering what your thoughts were on multi-bird households. Is there a chance that the two might become friends? The last thing I would want is to have two birds who resented each other. I've worked hard with the Timneh (a rescue bird), and he's become happy and confident and a moderate talker. I wouldn't want to jeopardize his progress by introducing another bird, and I wouldn't want to neglect the Amazon by trying to overcompensate with the Timneh. Do you have any practical advice? Comments: Thank you for allowing James Allen's "As a man Thinketh". You know, everybody is invited, just now, to a party, where is a table with everything one could possible desire. One only have to take it ! "Ask and you shall receive".I can take the thought that makes me happy. And I will receive its form or likeness. That's just simple. How much time and effort spent trying to visualize what I desire AGAINST what I really think and feel. Do you agree ? |

Comments: I am very grateful for your info. I am researching all I can about my new Sun Conure who asked to go home with me last week when I was in the pet store getting cat food. Imagine my surprise when I went in for a can of cat food and came out with the most expensive item in the store! I am in the process of getting certified in Professional Pet Assisted Therapy and was wondering if you thought conures would be suited. Frances (after St. Francis, patron saint of pets and animals) is only two months old now but we are having fun together. |

Comments: My sun conure got away outside one day and flew deep into the woods. We were very lucky to hear him before a hawk found him. We convinced him to come down by pouring his Nutra-Berries back and forth into his food dish. Your site is wonderful. Hope this tip helps someone, even though I hope they never need to. |

Comments: I also copied the book into Microsoft Word, making sure I got each italicized word accurately. The book is also published by Peter Pauper Press in Mt. Vernon NY. They sell it for $7.95. My much older copy origianlly sold for $1.00. It has no print date on it, so I can only go by the fact that it is yellow and brittle. I agree that it is one of the most important books ever written. Oddly enough, some of his quotes come from the Roman slave Seneca. It's strange how truth has always been around and just keeps bobbing up from time to time! |

Comments: We got a conure 14 years ago from a garage sale.Go figure! he was already 6 years old at that time and now he is 19 years old. This morning I gave him-Freckles-is his name, a shower as I always gave him. After I got up stairs from the basement ,he because real limpy, unstabled on his feet, not to much life in him. I was wondering 'What the heck?' I took a warm clean towel and wrapped him in it to keep him warm. It almost looked like he was going into shock or something. This has never happened before. I held him for at least 10-15 minutes and then he slowly started to lift his head, but he sure wasn't himself yet. He even allowed the boys to pet him and touch his head. Now it is mid-afternoon and he is eating, drinking etc. He usually screeches or squacks,he sure isn't making to much noise. In all these years he was just an aggresser, biting with limited handling because he'd always bites. I just figured I write to you and see if this has ever happened to your conures? I did call the vet on this matter. I will just keep an eye on him. Thanks! Oh yeah! Enjoy your website on conures. |

Comments: I was very happy to find your page as I did a search on James Allen. My father who passed away in Sept. at 81 lived by As A Man Thinketh. Ever since I was a little girl (I am now 40) he would share passages and thoughts from this great book. My father was very poor as a child and from nothing became a leader and innovator in the insurance and Mutual Fund Industry owning one of the largest Broker Dealers in the country for the last 20 years of his working life. He attributes much of his success in business and in life as a loving, caring, ethical person to the inspiration he received from James Allens writings. Thank you for putting together this tribute! |

Comments: Your page is wonderful! Thank you so much! There's an adorable green conure with a black head at my local PetSmart, and I'm dying to get him (nevermind the fact that he's tamer than my current budgie, who was wild for a few months before I caught him.) How well do conures deal with being left alone during the day? My last budgie was ok with the TV on, but very happy to see us. Also, I'm wondering about biting- does it really hurt froma beak that big? Thanks a bunch! |

Comments: I came across a snippet of "As a Man Thinketh" when I was in my late teens; I'm now in my 40's. It was the part, "Man is made or unmade by himself...maker and shaper of condition, environment and destiny". At that time, I didn't know who the author was but since that day, those words have lived in my heart. I've always felt an awe and a great appreciation for this unknown author (because I didn't know who they were was until today), who so eloquantly expressed how I felt about "thought". Today, I surfed the net just for the heck of it because I couldn't quite remember all the exact words and to my great surprise and delight, I came across this website. Thank you! I will share this site with my friends. Deb |

Comments: A very close friend of mine had purchased "The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn", the four complete books in one copy, and read it. He had felt that this book would help me move forward in my life since I had many changes that recently taken place in my life. I read this and now carry it with me most days. I say my affirmations daily and have found a transformation of my philosophy, life and general well-being. I have now purchased several copies for my friends. What a chain effect. I have found so much inspiration from this book and from her teachings that I thank my friend often for his wonderful gift. |

I am refering to 'The Grail Message,'In The Light of Truth' by Abd-ru-shin; if you have not already heard about it. It is the Work for which writings such as James Allen's prepare the human spirit! On Friday the first day he was loving and sweet by Sunday night he started biting me. He is ok with other family members. At first he would just bite and hiss when I tried to take him off my shoulder. He was still loving would cuddle and kiss me. This morning he was also sweet at first, then all of a sudden he bit my lip. Do you have any suggestions? |

Comments: Just thinking/researching the Sun Conure. Your website is very informative. Thanks for the education. I am used to finches, quaker parakete, cockatailes and a newly aquired Fischer Lovebird. The lovebird is the only one I have right now and learning a lot. I've always heard the exotic birds are quite demanding on time and attention, thus my research prior to purchasing. My husband and I breed paint horses, English Setter and Schipperke dogs. Just a little on the animal side and really enjoy it. Thanks for having me and it's been a pleasure vising your website. We have one too, www.bnbpaintranch.com, Sue -n- Bill Bates. Thanks Sue |

She got loose from someone and flew into a friend's hair and a year and a half later shes a wonderful addition to our family. Although we had tried to locate her previous owner she has happily "trained" us as her newly adopted family. Any advice you might be able to share regarding biting is gratefully apreciated. She has quite the personality and "Tude". Reminds me of how much I miss New York actually. New York now is never more than a screech away for me. You can email me at the above address. |

Comments: I just got my first conure. Chia is a gold crown and a little sweetheart. She (?) is four months old and so affectionate!!! I can't resist her and am constantly checking on her and playing with her. She has taught my quaker (Herbie) manners and he is adjusting well! They seem to be becoming great friends. Although in separate cages they like to sit as close to each other as possible. Chia is too "new" to play outside on the playground with Herbie but I don't think it will be long before they can. great site, Louie sounds like a real sweetheart! |

Comments: Your page was quite helpful. I was just given a 20 year old bird, because the owner and he had become intolerable to each other. He was on a total diet of sunflower seeds and since reading your page he has been switched to a beginning diet of the kaytee food. He has also been tried on everything from carrots to cheerios. Willy seems to be settling in nicely. I had a small fischers love bird years a go and missed having a bird in my home. Willy is Green with a red head and redorange tips to his wing arch. He is gorgeous and well on his way to being a spoiled old man. Thank you for your conure expertise sharing. Linda |

Comments: Peace & Blessings, My righteous sister referred me to the Book "As A Man Thinketh." I have only read the first two chapters, though I look forward to gaining even more peace, serenity, and clarity in meditation than I now have, by using this book as a guide. Thank you for sharing! Comments: Enjoyed reading your page. Dillon (peach face conure) came to live with us about a month ago and he is quit the character and seems to be adjusting very well. The only real problem that we have had is he will not let us touch him, he loves to sit on shoulders and be hand feed he will even let me kiss him but he has a fit if we try to touch him with our finger. If you have any suggestions please let us know. Thanks Ronda |

Comments: as did conversations with God, these books found me,and at a time when they were most appropriate. Some would say fluke, I however know better. For something to be able to put a smile my face regardless of whats going on around, is something pretty special. So Florence, i know you're reading this, keep up the good work and keep these so called "flukes" happening, for more people nowadays need your help than ever before. Thankyou,"invisible and visible" |

Comments: Thanks for the info...I always wanted a conure and recently acquired two! The pet store made me a huge deal, it was closing and they were too close to be separated. One is a dusty I thought she said and you had Dusky. The other is a cinnamon. She is really tender, the other still real nippy, My son Jaron is 6 and he is crazy about them. I considered letting a friend buy the other and he started crying, so I'll do my best with my little biter. I'm ready to be patient. He is just bossier to the other one but they are close. It will be a long learning process but I'm on my way. Thanks again, Cindy |

Comments: I dont own a Conure but the way you talk about them I think it would be excellent to own one. I am currently looking for a parrot to add to the family but as I live in Australia, i am not too sure if them breeds are available, still, i can try and look around. Great Site!! -Melissa- |

Comments: Dear Linda, Thank you so much for the info. I have a Jenday and a Green cheeked(?)who were former cellmates and separated. I first adopted the Jenday and CB was sold twice to two more bad homes and then I was offered him when he was so mean, he was going to be destroyed. One day they recognized each other and have been best buds ever since. I never knew what to expect from them but the Jenday was close to me from the beginning. It has taken 3years for poor CB to be my friend, but he is now the comic of the family and a very special love. I thought I was the only person in the world with 'birdclothes' and nap partners!! Nice to know I am not crazy alone! I was tired of explaining to non bird people. Thank you so much for insight. Bonnie |

Comments: Hi Linda I have read in various sources about these "socks" that conures like to sleep in, some people have used normal socks. Could you tell me a little about this and how to rig a sock in a cage for the bird to sleep in? Otherwise my little Green Cheek is coming along fine. Thank you, you have a great site, interesting and informative. |

Comments: We have recently reared a Green Cheek and it's now about 6 weeks old. I must agree, what characters. We've called ours "Cheeky Bird". He loves apple, loves bathing in the kitchen sink, loves snuggling up on your lap or palm of your hand flat on his back and will go to sleep like this. He (not really sure of sex) does tend to throw a bit of a tantrum sometimes but I've noticed that this is when he's ready to snuggle and go to sleep. Is this common and do you think it will pass? We are now raising a "Princess's Parrot" this is a new learning curve altogether. |

Comments: My newly (6 weeks ago) acquired boy (?) "Ramesis" is already a part of the family. He is an adorable loud and demanding creature, full of personality and attitude. He spends a few hours in the cage when we are at work and he's out the moment we are back until we go to bed. I wish I knew why he attacks my husband so viciously. In spite of that we both enjoy having him so much, the pain/gain theory, you know, that not only he's always out, we cannot find it in our hearts to take him to the vet and have his wings clipped. Congratulation on your fantastic presentation. margarita |

Comments: I have a nanday conure. His name is Charlie. I love my bird so much and do not know his age. I am curious how to determine an approximate age. I did read on another site that as they mature, their feet become blackish or darker in colour. Is this true. Charlie cannot speak yet either but he does TRY. The pet shop where I bought Charlie told me that he was about one and a half years old. When can they begin learning speech? Do you know? I loved reading your information. Also, would you know how to toilet train your bird? I keep a receiving blanket on my shoulder to catch any droppings, but I have heard that conures (Charlie is a black masked conure/nanday) can be toilet trained to go in their cage. Is this true? Charlie is VERY loving. He always gives me lots of kisses (he licks me) and he grooms my long hair! He makes a running water sound whenever I take a sip of coffee and he will make that pretty bird whistle sound only when I do not ask him to. If I want him to whistle, he will not!! Very stubborn I guess...or maybe he just wants to listen to ME whistle!! Any help with my quetions on age, toilet training, or when speech can start would be greatly appreciated. I enjoyed your site and your pictures of Louie/Louise!!! Thank you |

Comments: I can't express how nice it is to hear (read) of someone else who has their heart stolen away from them by a bird! lol :) I have a sun conure as well-'Pretty Girl'- who was given to me as a cage/show bird. Now, after lots of love and trust, on both parts and about 6 months later, we are the best of friends. She (He?) has become my little shadow while I am home. (But I am not complaining...heeheehee) One of the cutest things she will do is actually crawl in my shirt and sleep! (Or, she will-after puncturing my shirt with lots of holes, put her eye up to one of the holes and just watch the world go by in the safty and warmth between my shirt and body.) I actually miss her when she is busy playing oh her own. lol However, I have come to a concern... While giving her her normal rub down that she loves so much, I noticed an air-filled like buldge just below her rectum... (her poopoo hole) Sorry, I don't know the "correct" wordage for that area...lol I am wondering if it could be gas or something serious. She is still as lovable and sweet as ever, but like you said on your web page, birds tend to "cover-up" any illnesses and such. Have you ever heard of anything like this? It may just be normal as well, and I just now noticed it... I'm not sure... If you have any ideas or feedback I'd be more than happy to hear from you! Hope you and yours are doing great!! I enjoyed reading your web site and found it to be most informative! Take care and God bless.. :) |

Comments: Hi,Linda! It's so nice to be a guest in your hut! I feel, as a tired rambler, it is a very good place to have a rest for a while. And, it is so clean and cozy and full of beautiful decoration( I mean the excerpts) that I just forget to leave:) To be frank, there is a bit of shame for me that I can appreciate little about the themes of some articles(especially to those poems) as I am a chinese and know little about the background of the works. So, could you be so kind as to inform us some background knowledge of the works or just tell us why you like it? So far I want to know most is the poem of Christopher Logue--Come to the Edge. I have the foggest idea about why you appreciate so much? As far as I can see, he tended to tell us that we shall be brave to face the unknown or the to stride forwards as a pioneer just like the poet--Guillaume Apollinaire. Did I get the grip? Again, thank you for your great effort and expect to find in your room as many beautiful articles as possible. Best regards, yours Terry |

Comments: Hello, I had a nice time reading your wonderful stories with your Conure. I have a Quaker that has been with me for about a month now, and he/she (Jade) is a wonderful friend. I have been interested in purchasing a Conure, but I am not sure how it would work out, now that I have a Quaker. I work from my home and Jade stays in my office with me and I'm not sure if he would become jealous with a new friend in the same room, (seperate cages of course). Do you think that they may have a screaming contest? All of my time is spent with Jade since he/she is in my office while I work, and he has become very attach to me. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Lynette |

Comments: thanks for some really great info. I bought a 9 month old hand raised conure about 3 months. she bonded really quick with me and likes to sleep in the same bed. I have put a sock in her cage that she crawls into at nite to sleep in. This weekend I was cleaning her cage on our open deck and she got loose. Flew over top the house and was gone but I could hear her sqwauking. I ran through the garage to the front lawn but still couldn't see her. Meanwhile my husband ran out onto the deck and saw her sitting about 60 feet up in a tree overlooking the deck where her cage was. We tried for six hours to get her to fly down but the two times she tried she slipped off the tiny branch she was on and scared herself and flew higher. During this time we tried food, treats, toys everything. Nothing worked. Finally we got out a 30 foot ladder, mind you she is still up over 60 feet in the tree, and put it against the house. She tried again to come to me only she slipped and scared herself again. This time she ended up facing away from us. There was a dead tree about 15 feet away from the tree she was in. We propped the ladder against that tree and up I went, and I'm scared of heights. I had a plastic bucket of her favorite treats, little round seed balls. I was about 20 feet lower than her but facing her and across from her. I called her and sure enough her little wings started flapping and shw was quivering back and forth trying to get up her courage to fly. It took her about 2 minutes and she finally launched herself towards the tree I was in. She landed on a branch about 10 inches from me. I extended my finger to her and told her to "step up" and sure enough she did. I then grabbed her securely and with my other hand dumped the bucket of seeds,(unfortunately on my husbands head) and stuffed her in the bucket and put the top on. Raced down the ladder and into the house. I consider it a miracle that we got her back. We call her Bubbles or Skwauky depending on how loud she is and she gotten in the habit of trying to eat anything that I eat and stealing from my fork as I try to get it into my mouth. They really do have strong personalities and she has still not forgiven my husband for yelling at her when we first brought her home. She is very protective of me and has divebombed assistants working in the vet's office when they got too near to me. She's trying to help me type right now. Again thanks for the web site Debbie Hegeman |

Comments: Linda, I was searching for a quoyte that I had read many years ago by whom I beleive to be Allen. Maybe you can help me get it right and complete it: "There is a tide in the ways of men, if caught at the crest it leads to (something amounting to a glorious and fruitful life), if it is missed it leads to(something amounting to a miserable and treacherous existence). Any match on the above and Allen and if so can you help me get my hands around it exactly. Thank You Anthony Davino adavino@fidelityland.com |

Comments: I too have a conure, a black headed nanday. he came to me after a phone call I received from my friend saying she knew of someone that was being evicted. She needed to find a home for the conure, and would I take him in? Well I did, along with two cockatiels. My conure's name is Felix, and is everything you describe of Louie. However, he is not all that playful with toys, or nor will he let me try to teach him any tricks. But, the love he gives and shows are every bit worth the time I have with him. Keep up the words of encouragement, and tell the truth so that no conure is left without a home. Denise |

Comments: Just bought my first conure today. My son and I met him in the pet shop. He looked horrified when the pet shop girl attended to him, but flirted with us when she left. I fell in love with him, partially because he liiked lonely, but I think he did it on purpose! Anyway, I'm just surfing and learning--with Paily on my shoulder already!! Thanks for the info.! It was helpful! |

Comments: Our 5 month old Jenday, Quincy, has been welcomed into our home with great enthusiasm. We love to watch him, play with him, feed him, you name it, we love it. We have been hand feeding him for 2 months and he seems to be weaning himself. He likes the mixed seed we purchased from the breeded, but is picking out the sunflower seeds. Please advise us as to what we should buy for him. We, of course, want his diet to be adequate in every way. Also, how do we get him to try grapes, carrots, etc.? Love your web page. Please keep up good work. I would love to meet Louie. He sounds so much like our Quincy. |

Comments: Hi Linda, I enjoyed reading about Louie, he's a beautiful bird. I was recently given two Nandayus Conures (I don't know their sex or age), I was told that they are thought to be about 2 or 3 years old. I have a cockateil that is 15 yrs. old, and he is an(only bird) in this big cage. I was wondering if I put the two conuers in with the cockateil if they would get along together, as their cage is not nearly as big as the cockateils cage. Can you tell me if you think this "arrangement" would work with all three birds in the bigger cage. I wouldn't want my Cockateil hurt by the conuers. What do you think? Any help with this question will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much Linda, Sincerley, Mildred Crews Hawthorne, Fla. |

Comments: Hi LInda, Thank you so much for the infomation that you were able to provide regarding conures. I am in the process of researching, "the Painted Conure species" since I am trying to find a quieter conure. I came across your page doing my research...the information that you provided was very helpful. Thank you. :-) I do have one question for you regarding diseases in conures. I was told by someone to be careful when buying a Conure because Conures can carry diseases or are prone to diseases that are not detectable and can be transmitted to other birds. Is this true? I have conluded with some of my research that this could be true for many types of birds but ...Is the conure species a higher risk in this area? Thanks for your time and input. Sincerely Christina |

Comments: Hi. I found you on google. We have just been 'adopted' by a 2 year old conure. She has only 'owned' us for a couple of days and she has not yet let us know what her name is! Guesses have ranged from Sunshine, Gabby or Lulu. We are total amatuers and found your web page very informative. We have a lot to learn! However, we do recognise a lot of the behaviour that you have listed and your advice will be most helpful. Kind regards Ian. Nottingham, England. |

Comments: I just purchased a Peach Fronted Conure a week ago, and we are in love. From the moment it stepped onto my finger, I knew this bird was the one for me. I haven't chosen the perfect name just yet, as I am giving him, or her(!!) time to settle in and show its true colors, and devilish nature..a truely sweet, gentle, beautiful, loving bird. We are building our trust together and taking it slow, trying not to over handle it as I want it to stay content and non stressed. Will not eat fruits or vegatables, so back to the pet store I go for another dose of spoil my bird rotten!! We (cat),nap together(no cats in this house!!), in the afternoons, me sitting up, of course, and it on my shoulder. So much to get to know for such a little creature. We eventually want to purchase a Double Yellow Headed Amazon, so our Conure will teach us plenty...and then some!! |

Comments: Thank you for the story of "Louie". He (she) sounds wonderful. I have been mesmerized by an 8 month old Gold Capped Conure in my local pet store...he was hand-fed and is absolutely a "clown". He lies upside downs, dives into his water dish, loves to be petted, etc. etc. I am thinking of buying him but am NEW to the bird world. Perhaps I should look for a "newborn". Any advice. Lastly, do you know if one can bring a bird on an airplane? THanks, again, for sharing your conure knowledge. |

Comments: Hi Linda, Last night I was offered a 5-6 year old conure by a friend whose daughter in California owns him (I'm in Wisconsin). I have two parakeets in a large flight cage, and my 'keets are doing well, eat Harrison's pelleted food plus raw spinach and broccoli. I work out of my home, so am in and out. I am thinking about taking this bird, but don't want to be bitten or have my life run by him!! If he is in a room with the 'keets would that be something that could occupy him while I am not here? I know I could take good care of him (his name is Jake) but am not sure if I am up to the commitment. My sons are grown and I live alone (except for my sons visiting occasionally). I have an indoor cat that is not allowed in the Bird Room, and she respects that restriction. (I have a motion detector at the door of the room when I am here, otherwise I close the door. There is a TV and radio in the room. I sense taking him would be a project for me, and maybe that's a good thing...I love birds! Just thought I would bounce some of this stuff off of you. What are your thoughts? Thanks! Gail |

Comments: Well i am 15 and my parrot seems to be jealous of me! Whenever i go near my Dad qho she absoloutley loves she attacks me. This has become worse now and she attacks me whenever she is let out the cage. Now, i don't let her out of the cage and i feel so guilty becuase she is stuck 24 hours a day in the cage. So can u please email me (maltesers629@hotmail.com) and tell me how to overcome this problem. I really love my parrot but it seems like we can't keep her anymore. And she's only 2. We've hd her for over a year now. Thanks and great site! Lesley |

Comments: I Enjoyed your site alot! Esp your sense of humor when talking about Louie! I was in my local pet store buying live crickets for my 4 Bearded Dragons (lizards) when this gorgeous bird came strutting up to me and cocked his head as if to say, and just why havent you taken me home yet? I did the 'step up' thing and here he was sitting on my shoulder cuddling up to my neck....now how do you walk away from something like that? I took him back to the bird dept and starting asking ???? about him. Wellll, needless to say, I too am a whimp, and Smokey (Green Cheeked Conure, 6 mos old)now lives in my home. Smokey & our 11 month old lab pup & 4 Dragons actually rule the home now....LOL I am ill to the point that they are counting the time I have left and now having to put my dragons up for adoption *frowns* but getting so much out of having Smokey to talk to now. He doesnt judge me and isnt too demanding so far. He has learned 2 words in 2 days and it just tickles me to death( no pun intended) lol, when he talks. Thank you so much for the info you included on your site. Smokey goes in for his 'weight check' today and they are going to be surprised since they warned me that he might not eat for a few days...he's eating great....they also told me that only 1 gal in the store could handle him....he already loves me unconditionally...JUST GOTTA LUV THE CONURES! again....thank you for the info you have gathered and the stories you told about Louie and the encouragement you have given me that getting Smokey was the right thing to do. nina |

Comments: I found "The Way of Peace", by James Allen at a local antique store. When I stumbled across it, I was intrigued by the name of the book, little did I know that It would have such an amazing impact on my life. I am not so sure when this particular book was released because the date is not disclosed, but on the inside cover is a gentleman's name who apparently received this book as a gift in 1930. I became quite interested in this book and when it was written!!!! Any information please email me.... Faith |

Comments: I read online about a book by a psychiatrist on letting go of fear and was compelled to drive to my nearest book store to see if they had it. Instead I found "The Game of Life" and started reading it right there in the book store. Eventually I paid for it but didn't leave the store until I had finished reading it. It was as if this book was the event today had in store for me. For the past few weeks I've been in the "always darkest before the dawn" period and now through this book so much has opened up for me. Now to apply it all. |

Comments: I recently acquired (a month ago) a cherry headed conure from a bad home; I named him(?)Tyler. He has been abused and is very scared and distrustful of anyone who comes near him. I tried to get him to sit on my arm (a year ago when I first saw him but he bit me so hard it left a bruise for about a week. I didn't yell or anything just clenched my teeth until he was through. I know.. dumb move but I assumed Tyler would see I was friendly and of course would be friendly back lol) When I first got him, if I came near him,for any reason,he shook and moved to the back of his cage. I do nothing to scare him in any way and encouraged him to be noisy with me even (I would imitate his sounds). Now we have loud conversations every morning and he comes to the front of the cage and talks to me.. He gets within a foot of me now and doesn't shake in terror. So any advice on how to go about getting him on my arm with a minimal of biting? lol If I put my arm out to him he backs away and shakes a little again.. Which I hate to see. Tyler is such a good bird though, I hope to someday have him on my arm like I do my other birds (8 cockatiels and 2 Budgies all from bad homes but the 1 I bought originally so I could have a bird lol) Sorry for the mini-book but I wanted to give you a little background on Tyler and me.. Thanx for such a great web page on Louie and conures in general too. He sounds like a really good bird and I learned alot reading it :) |

Comments: I read As a Man Thinketh almost daily and have done so for several years. This book gives a life-changing message that soothes and encourages me each time I read it. I often wonder about the man, James Allen. How did he become so wise, so understanding of the nature of life? These qestions led me to your webpage. I was searching for other books written by Allen. Don't you wish the whole world could read and absorb the message Allen gave to us? Maybe then we would find 'peace on earth, good will to men'. Thanks for sharing! |

Comments: I also am owned by my Nanday named Sweetpea. I just have a little suggestion that works for me personally. Every now and then I will take Sweetpea into the shower with me and put him under the edge of the spray so he isn't bombarded with water. He loves it--spreads and flaps his wings and gets all excited. When he is done and it is my turn to shower I set him up on the shower curtain rod and do what I have to while he preens and watches. I was wondering if you have ever heard of Conure Cozys. They are these little fleece (I guess) pockets for conures to snuggle into when they go to sleep. If you find a place to buy them please let me know. Thanks Tracey Ross dtross4@hotmail.com |

There really isn't enough information on the web about these little guys and thats sad. If anyone has anymore info on my fid, please let me know patriotbrat@yahoo.com Cicero is 1 1/2 years old and I would really like to do the best I can for him. Thanks alot Casey |

Comments: I just purchased a blue fronted amazon from a friend. I have had cockateils for years and have been wanting a big bird. He told me the bird is about 3yrs old and he has had it a little over a year. I will be the third (and last hopefully) owner. He has been a very docile bird for my friend , however never really talked, just quaked alot. Any advice as to how I can make his transition to my home less stressfull on him/her. Also, I clip the wings of my tiels, but this bird has a beek that can put a hurtin' on you. My friend said he will not bite for nothing, he's very friendly. Should I attempt this myself, his wings have not been clipped for over a year. Please advise, thanks, JJ |

Comments: It was a pleasure reading what you had to say. I am thinking about buying a sun conure. I'm concerned about the noise they make at times although I read somewhere that they could be trained not to be sooo loud. I am retired and can spend alot of time with him. I am looking for a loving, friendly, affectionate bird that I can handle & love. I am close to buying one that has been hand fed and is 5mo old or one that is 2mo and I will hand feed him. I'm not sure yet. If you have time I would greatly appreciate any comments you might have. Thank you |

Comments: I just wanted to let you know that I'm glad I found your page. I bought a baby sun conure (haven't brought him home yet) and have been trying to find real people to clue me in a little. Advice from books isn't always as good as hands on from a bird mom. So thanks for all the info. Misty |

Comments: Enjoyed your conure info. We've had "Dusty", a Dusky conure for 20 years. To add, when we are having a "conversation", Dusty's eyes get "wide eyed", and his breath smells different (for a few moments). Also, occasionally he "sucks his thumb" and "drools" a brownish liquid for a few moments. Don't know what that's all about. He also cuddles up to my neck and holds onto my hand (tight), and wants me to rub is back with my chin. He is "potty trained", and takes showers with me (in the shower). We used to take walks when he was younger. He would simply "hang on", under my blouse, and would not come out until we were back home. He also plays hide and seek...on command! We love our conure! Thanks again! |

Comments: Thanks for the information. We just looked at a pair of (green--I'm unsure of their species) conures tonight that someone was selling privately. I don't know a lot about the breed and currently have a cockatiel, parakeet, and 4 finches. The consures had a nice big cage, but were in a shadowy, gloomy corner of a dark basement. I felt kind of sorry for them, but they seemed to be somewhat friendly and came out of their cage onto my husband's arm. They want $250 total for the 2 birds and cage. Their reason for selling is no one pays much attention to them anymore. One had a broken beak--they said it got bit/broken off at birth. I'm a little concerned about how loud they might be and wondered if that's why they were subjected to the basement (they weren't very loud when we were there, but it was about 9 p.m. If you have any comments about this, please write back. Thanks. |

Comments: We have just acquired a conure. My niece and her husband have had this one for about 3-4 years. Recently, they say it has become annoying and bothersome, so we took it off their hands. We were looking to get my girlfriends son a cockatiel for his birthday, but this actually worked out very well. I was extremely hesitant at first thinking about the problems I heard about this bird. However, he seems to have fit right in and seems to like his new home. I am not a bird person, but he seems to only want to be on my shoulder (maybe because I'm the tallest???). Anyway, it is a beautiful bird and I hope we are able to fullfill it's attention needs. My girlfriends kids love all their animals (dog, turtles, geckos, tortoises) and I'm sure they have enough attention to give Tequila. I learned a few things from your site and appreciate someone taking the time to write something on this type of bird. Thank you... I'll probably be coming back for some reminders here shortly... Thanks again... Joe Montgomery |

Comments: I was recently given an eleven month old conure, named Max. Max was spending a lot of time alone & had a very limited amount of handling. He was biting the previous owners & they didn't want to deal with him. He doesn't appear to be tramatized by the move, I handle him a lot & talk to him even when I'm not in his line of sight. Is the "ducking" gesture the norm? Whenever I pet him he immediately ducks as if afraid. I was whistling to him, yet your info states to speak softly...so I'll change my approach. Your site was filled with information and humor which I enjoyed. Thanks! |

Comments: My Grey Cheek Parakeet had to be put down after 19 years due to a brain tumor. After much research I purchased a baby Blue-Crown Conure-he was wonderful! Six weeks later he was strangled by his favorite toy, hanging colored cotton strings. I was devastated! Now thinking about a Sun. Would you recommend a Sun/Jenday combo? |

Comments: We have just become the owners of a 5 year old Green-Cheeked Conure. I was alittle sceptical at first as three years ago we lost our two cockatiels Beakie and Nickie which was very upsetting as they were very close buds to both myself and my husband. But after having Tarzan now for almost a month he has won our hearts over and has become a wonderful addition. I glad that I just happened upon your site as I found it to be very informative and useful. Bev G. |

Comments: I agree, As A Man Thinketh is an exceptional little book of wisdom. I wonder about Allen's connection to Buddhism, and how it came about. Not only does he mention the Buddha in AAMT, but the quote on the second page, although not attributed, is from the "Twin Verses" of the Dhammapada. |
